LACK - a furniture fairy tale
The birth of the LACK table is a classic IKEA story. Once upon a
time, most wood furnishings were made of solid wood. This is fine,
but not ideal.
Then one day, an IKEA product developer was touring
a door factory. He noticed how they made strong yet lightweight
doors using a construction method called board-on-frame. This is
a sandwich construction of a honeycomb core surrounded by layers
of wood. It looked solid but was lightweight. It was environmentally
friendly because it used less timber. It could be stronger than
solid wood, and best of all, it was more cost-effective.
The product developer took a door and turned it
90 degrees to make a tabletop. With legs added later, it magically
became LACK. LACK now comes in different sizes, colours and finishes.
And like many of our most innovative solutions, it has become a
very popular item.
