2018 was filled with many proud milestones. Not only did we open our very first store in India, we also took important steps towards expansion into South America. In total, 19 new stores opened and new exciting expansion plans were initiated. Scroll down to learn more about our new opportunities.
By 2025 we aim to open 25 stores in India, some of them with a brand-new touch and appearance.
Expansion is more than just numbers
Before opening the first IKEA store in Hyderabad, India, our co-workers conducted a pretty extensive study. They visited thousands of Indian homes, and had fruitful discussions about life in general – and life at home in particular. This led to important learnings about Indian life at home and a more relevant offer for the new customers. After preparing for more than six years, the doors opened to the 400,000 square-feet store in August 2018.

Every country and region is a bit different, as are the dreams and needs of those who live there. Opening IKEA stores in new markets means enhanced and important possibilities to meet, talk and discuss with people. This is how we, over time, have developed our deep understanding of life at home.

¡Hola! South America
During 2018, we strengthened our position in our existing markets. We entered Latvia, and expanded at the same time in the UK, North America, the Middle East and Asia.
We’ll continue with 15 more retail locations in 2019, plus our very first South American stores the year after. 9 stores are planned for this region within a 10-year period – beginning with Chile, Peru and Colombia.
